- Community organizing gets results. Engaging community members, businesses, and organizations as partners in children's education can improve the learning community in many ways. For example, community partners may be able to
- provide expanded learning opportunities
- build broad-based support for increased school funding
- provide quality after-school programs
- The research is clear, consistent, and convincing – parent, family, AND community involvement in education correlates with higher academic performance in school improvement. When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to
- earn higher grades,
- attend school more regularly,
- stay in school longer, and
- enroll in higher level programs.
- Researchers site parent – family community involvement as a key to addressing the school drop out crisis and note that strong school – family – community partnerships foster higher educational aspirations and more motivated students.
STATISTICS for why you should join the PTA:
- A 2013 realtor.com survey of nearly 1000 prospective homebuyers said that 91% said school boundaries were important in their search.
- One out of five buyers would give up a bedroom or garage for a better school.
- One out of three would purchase a smaller home to wind up in the right district.
- One out of five home buyer said they would pay 6 to 10% above their budget for the right school. One out of 10 would double that to 20%.
In the end, though, it’s hard to deny that there is strong consumer demand for good schools. Demand drives prices higher for a product like real estate.
